Video Transcript: One of the most common procedures that I perform is breast augmentation. Patients commonly ask about the different implants available for breast augmentation. The two broad categories are silicone implants and saline implants. A saline implant is a salt water filled silicone shell or balloon. A silicone implant has a silicone shell with a highly cohesive silicone gel. What this means is the gel is thick almost like Jello.
There are options within saline implants as well as silicone implants. Saline implants now have the option of something called the IDEAL Implant. It is a saline implant, meaning it's filled with salt water, but has multiple layers of baffles inside which makes it feel more like a silicone implant. This is a great option for those patients who want more of a silicone feel, but prefer a saline implant. Silicone implants have the option of round implants vs. form-stable, or shaped, implants. These shaped implants are better for certain patients, whereas round implants are better for certain patients.
