Neck Lift in Bryn Mawr

Plastic Surgeon & Medical Spa Serving Bryn Mawr, Villanova & Communities Near The Main Line Of Philadelphia, PA

We typically notice the first signs of aging on our face in the form of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, nose and between the brows, but we often forget about the neck area. You’ve probably applied cleanser and moisturizer to your face for decades, but you may have left your neck out of your skincare routine. Your neck can be a telltale sign of aging with sagging skin, fat accumulation, or the dreaded “turkey wattle.” A neck lift is a plastic surgery option that can eliminate loose sagging skin, giving you a more youthful appearance. We offer both traditional surgical neck lift as well as a minimally invasive laser neck lift, and for those just wanting to address a double chin, we offer liposuction.

If you struggle with aging, loose skin around your neck or a double chin, please contact our board-certified plastic surgeon in Bryn Mawr today Text or Call to see if a neck lift or another facial plastic surgery is the right fit for you. Main Line Plastic Surgery provides restorative and cosmetic procedures and treatments to patients throughout Pennsylvania including Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia, Bala Cynwyd, and South Jersey.

We offer several different options when it comes to addressing the appearance of your neck. Click the links below to find out more details about these options and commonly asked questions, including:

What Is a Neck Lift?

There are a few methods to reverse signs of aging and weight gain or loss on your neck. In general, a neck lift, also known as a lower rhytidectomy, addresses sagging, wrinkled skin of your neck and vertical neck bands. The procedure involves tightening the underlying musculature of the neck to treat sagging in the neck and provide a sculpted, more youthful appearance while re-draping and removing excess neck skin to further enhance the rejuvenation of your neck and jawline.

A neck lift typically removes excess fat as well, correcting a double chin and providing a more defined profile. Incisions are hidden in front of the lower ear and behind the ear. For those patients with early signs of aging in the neck, a laser neck lift allows for a minimally invasive approach to address excess fat and moderate loose skin of the neck while defining the jaw line in an in-office procedure with minimal recovery.

Combining a Facelift and Neck Lift

Many of our facelift or mini-facelift patients undergo neck lift at the same time as their face lift and vice versa.  Face and neck lift go hand in hand; when performed together if both face and neck are showing significant signs of aging the results are remarkable.

Patients with signs of aging in the face and neck who chose to only treat one area often return for treatment of the other area saying that the other area now looks worse next to their younger looking face or neck. These are aesthetic issues they didn’t notice before as their face showed signs of aging also, but once the lines, wrinkles, and drooping skin of the face are improved, it’s difficult to ignore the neck region. That’s why Dr. Jean sometimes recommends doing both procedures at once to provide the best possible results.

Men and women often struggle with both areas as they get older, so addressing both the face and neck simultaneously offers better results without the need for a second procedure.

What is a Surgical Neck Lift?

The surgical neck lift tightens the muscles of the neck and removes loose skin restoring a youthful sculpted appearance to the neck and definition of the jaw line. This procedure is the gold standard for neck rejuvenation for those patients with significant signs of aging in the neck area. The neck lift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and patients most often can return home the day of surgery. Our plastic surgeon will discuss your many options to rejuvenate your neck during your initial consultation at our Bryn Mawr office.

Your incision site may vary, depending on the specific areas you’d like to improve. Traditionally, the incision for a neck lift starts in front of the bottom of the ear, continuing down around the ear and under the hair behind your neck. This allows Dr. Jean to tighten the muscles of the neck and remove excess skin to sculpt your neck. He will trim excess skin and tighten the underlying platysma muscle. Neck lifts to correct minor aesthetic concerns may only need small incisions around the ear, but this also limits the extent of your results.

Liposuction and treatment of vertical neck bands might require an additional incision beneath your chin, but this is small and can be closed with a skin adhesive or a few stitches. The incisions for a neck lift heal quite well and are easily concealed by your hairline and curvature of your ears.

The surgical neck lift may leave you with some bruising and swelling, but you’ll notice your neck lift results as you recover. You will look younger, rejuvenated, and likely experience a boost in confidence. At Main Line Plastic Surgery, we offer several variations of the neck lift to meet your specific goals.

Neck Liposuction

Liposuction of the neck is best for you if you have excess fat under your chin with minimal to no loose skin, it may also be performed as a component of a surgical neck left. Neck liposuction can often be performed in the office under local anesthesia with minimal down time.

Neck liposuction can be used to create a sculpted jawline and contoured neck. This could be the best route for you if you have good skin elasticity and muscle tone but neck “fullness” from excess fat. Liposuction can be performed with the facelift, chin augmentation, or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). The tiny incisions for neck liposuction are barely noticeable upon healing.

The procedure for liposuction of your neck can take as little as a half hour to perform. Dr. Jean most often will use local anesthesia, so you’re comfortable during the procedure and it can be performed in the office.

You’ll notice your more defined neck and chin quickly as the minor swelling recedes over the span of several weeks.

Dr. Jean typically recommends and uses SmartLipo™ because it offers the additional perk of skin tightening due to the heat of the laser that melts the fat cells, which are then removed with a thin, tube called a cannula. SmartLipo offers a faster recovery than traditional liposuction and results in less bruising and swelling.

Laser Neck Lift with Precision TX™

A laser neck lift uses a laser fiber beneath the skin to both melt fat and heat the deep dermis of the skin to promote skin tightening by stimulating your body to produce collagen and elastin. The reason it works so well is the delivery of laser energy directly to the deeper layer of skin where it is needed to stimulate collagen. External lasers used on the skin surface have limited effects of skin tightening, as they cannot heat the deep dermis to the desired temperature without burning the overlying skin. Precision TX avoids this by delivering laser energy directly to the deep skin layer where it is most effective in stimulating the production of collagen and elastin which results in skin tightening.

The laser neck lift is great for men and women with moderately loose skin and excess fat in the neck, who want a minimally invasive treatment to sculpt the neck and jaw line by removing fat and tightening the overlying skin but need minimal down time. The procedure takes approximately 1.5 hours, is performed in office without the need for general anesthesia and requires only a weekend recovery. Your results will continue to improve for 3-6 months following your procedure because of new collagen and elastin formation. Results are permanent but you will continue to age with time.

How should I Prepare for & Recover from Your Neck Lift?

Preparation for a neck lift involves setting the stage for your best results and recovery. Avoid alcohol and over the counter medications that may thin your blood such as ibuprofen and Aleve for a week to 10 days prior to surgery; Tylenol is OK.

Have someone to bring and pick you up from the procedure and someone who can stay with you the first 24 hours after the procedure. Make sure you are well stocked on food and other supplies to limit your need to run out to get these after surgery.

If you’re a smoker, you’ll need to stop smoking at least six weeks prior to your surgery and six weeks after. The longer you are not smoking, the better for your recovery and healing.

Make sure you tell Dr. Jean about all the medications and supplements, you take as well as any allergies during your consultation.

You may experience some minor swelling and bruising after your neck lift, but this is temporary and will resolve with time. Try to relax for at least the first week after your procedure avoid strenuous activity or lifting. Try to sleep with your head elevated on a few extra pillows as this will help to decrease swelling.

One of the aspects our patients love most about Main Line Plastic Surgery is Dr. Jean and our staff’s dedication. Dr. Jean will be available to answer all of your questions, even after hours for patients going through the recovery process.
