BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport

Plastic Surgeon & Medical Spa Serving Bryn Mawr, Villanova & Communities Near The Main Line Of Philadelphia, PA

Forehead lines, wrinkles between the brows (known as glabellar lines), and crows' feet are some of the most common signs of aging that our clients want to address with injectables or through plastic surgery such as a brow lift. BOTOX® Cosmetic has long been the main option to get rid of these aesthetic concerns, but Dysport® is a newer botulinum toxin that works similar to BOTOX. Both of these injectables can deliver great results, and the right one for you will depend on the extent of your lines and wrinkles and your desired look.

All of our INJECTABLES are performed by Dr. Raymond Jean himself, a board-certified plastic surgeon.

If you’re interested in BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport, please contact Main Line Plastic Surgery in Bryn Mawr today Text or Call to schedule your appointment. Our office provides a wide variety of dermal fillers and other injectables, so we can tailor your treatments to meet your desired goals.

How Does BOTOX Cosmetic Work?

BOTOX is probably the most commonly recognized injectable because it’s been available for decades. It contains non-harmful levels of Botulinum Toxin A, which works to temporarily relax the muscles in the area in which it’s administered. It’s typically used to relax the muscles in the forehead and brow, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to a smooth, youthful appearance.

It’s a simple, non-surgical procedure which takes less than 10 min and requires no downtime afterward.

Our patients often choose BOTOX Cosmetic before an important event such as a wedding or class reunion. Just remember both BOTOX and Dysport require several days to start noticing results and up to 2 weeks for full effect so schedule your treatment a few weeks before your event.

Your BOTOX Cosmetic treatment will take around 10 minutes. It involves an antiseptic cleanser on the skin and several injections in different areas of your forehead to ensure consistent results. Dr. Jean will calculate the amount needed based on the severity of your wrinkles.

How Old Should I Be to Start Getting BOTOX?

Both men and women choose to begin BOTOX at many different ages and for different reasons. As long as you are over 18, you are a candidate for BOTOX.

Some choose to start at a younger age in order to prevent the formation of wrinkles over time. We consider this part of your skin care regimen to keep you looking young and healthy. Easing or preventing movement in those areas of your face prone to wrinkling will keep you looking young and delay or prevent the formation of fine line and wrinkles.

Others choose to begin BOTOX or Dysport treatments when they notice the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on their face that are making them look older or angry. There is no one specific time when you should start BOTOX, but once you start you most definitely want to continue your treatments on a regular basis due to the improvements you will see in your appearance.

Will I Look "Frozen?"

Some patients worry about looking “frozen” with BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport. While some patients desire no appreciable movement in the forehead, most do not.

Decreasing fine lines and wrinkles while at the same time maintaining natural facial expression can easily be achieved by an experienced injector, often with less BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport than a less experienced injector. Location of injection is more important that the amount. All of our injectables are performed by Dr Jean himself

Recovery after BOTOX or Dysport Injections

After treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport, you will have a small amount of swelling at the injection sites (similar to a mosquito bite). This swelling will resolve usually in 15 minutes or less. A few patients can have a headache afterwards, although this is not common and resolves in less than 24 hours. Occasionally there may be a small bruise at an injection site which can easily be covered with makeup.

As the BOTOX or Dysport begins to take effect, it is common to feel as though the treated areas are heavy and/or numb. This resolves over several weeks. We recommend waiting 24 hours to exercise after treatment, otherwise there are no restrictions.

You will begin to notice the improvement in the treated areas in 3 days and will reach full results by 2 weeks.

The cost of these medical spa procedures varies depending on the product and other factors. We can help you determine the best way to finance your treatments during your consultation.

Are You a Candidate for Age-Defying Injectables?

There are very few people who are not a candidate for treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport. These include:

  • Pregnant or breast feeding women
  • Allergy to cow milk protein (Dysport)
  • Under 18 years of age
  • Myesthenia Gravis

What Areas Can Be Treated with BOTOX or Dysport?

The most common areas treated are:

  • Lines between the eyebrows called the glabella or 11’s
  • Forehead lines
  • Crows feet (lines on the sides of the eyes)
  • Vertical neck bands
  • Fullness of the jaw line (creates a less rounded appearance of the face)
  • Smile lines

Who Is Not a Candidate for Injectables?

Those who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding should avoid injectable treatment until their doctor clears them. Patients who suffer from a neuromuscular disorder or those who may be allergic to the ingredients within injectables may not be suitable for injectable treatments.

How Long Will My Treatment Take?

Often called “the lunchtime procedure,” both BOTOX and Dysport treatments can take as little as 15 minutes, making it easy to schedule an appointment during a lunch break and return to work afterward. While this time may vary depending on the size of the area you are getting treated, procedures are often quick and easy and allow patients to return to their daily routines almost immediately.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From BOTOX or Dysport?

Injectables like BOTOX and Dysport require very little recovery time. Although patients may experience slight inflammation of the treated area, stinging, or a heavy feeling in the face, most discomfort will disappear the same night. Patients rarely experience pain after injectable treatments. It can take up to three weeks for your injectables to look natural on your face.

How Long Does BOTOX or Dysport Last?

BOTOX

BOTOX injectables can last anywhere from three to four months with the proper care. For some patients, their injectables may last up to six months. Having a gentle skin routine, wearing sunscreen daily, and avoiding alcohol immediately after your treatment can help your BOTOX results last longer.

Dysport

Dysport injectables typically last slightly longer than BOTOX for up to an average of five months for most patients. By following the same gentle skincare practices mentioned above, your Dysport results may last longer. To maintain a youthful, wrinkle-free appearance, many patients seek follow-up Dysport treatment every three to four months.
