From the moment the seasons change – from a brisk fall to a frigid winter – your skin begins to suffer. The change in weather, coupled with the warm indoor heat, results in a lack of moisture in the environment. This will ultimately leave your skin dry, cracked, dehydrated and dull.
So how do we combat the cold air that leaves our skin lacking luster and moisture? It’s simple – double down on moisturizers and make the necessary changes to your environment and daily skin care routine.
It’s a common misconception that you can utilize the same skin care products year-round. For some individuals this may work, but for those with dehydrated, aging, combination or sensitive skin, this is most likely not the case. The skin care basics still remain the same:
However, your products need to be adjusted to accommodate for the dry air. Below are some of our favorite skin care products, along with some tips to help combat the dry winter air.
Avoid Harsh Cleansers
Cleansing your skin in the AM and PM should be the first step of your skin care regimen, regardless of the season. Using a moisturizing, gentle cleanser is key in an effort to avoid stripping the skin of its natural oils. We recommend SkinCeuticals gentle cleanser. This gentle, non-irritating cleanser with citrus oil calms and soothes your skin while removing impurities.
Turn Down the Water Temperature
Excessive hot water does not hydrate the skin. Hot showers and baths always feel good in the winter, but when you can, particularly when just washing your face or hands, choose lukewarm water to avoid stripping as many oils away from the skin.
A lack of hydration can cause your skin to produce more wrinkles and dry out much faster.
Additional Adjustments to Your Skin Care Routine
The following adjustments to your skin care routine will help ensure your skin stays healthy, hydrated and beautiful during the winter months:
- Add hyaluronic acid to your skin care regimen
- Switch to a heavier moisturizer
- Exfoliate regularly
In addition, we recommend that you add SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore to your skin care regimen. This anti-aging lipid replenishment treatment works to restore the skin’s external barrier and nourish skin to improve signs of aging.
You should also use sunscreen whenever you are outside. The sun’s rays are just as strong during the winter months. We recommend that you use SkinCeuticals Sheer UV Defense SPF. It is transparent, ultra-sheer and oil-free. This sunscreen also contains zinc oxide, titanium oxide and Artemia Salina, which increase resistance to UV and heat stress.
