Facelift vs. Injectables: Which is Right for Me?

You have a wide range of facial rejuvenation options available if you would like to reverse the signs of aging. For some men and women, nonsurgical treatments such as injectables will effectively achieve their goals. For others, a surgical procedure such as a facelift may be a better solution.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Raymond Jean will listen carefully to your goals and evaluate your signs of aging in order to recommend the right solution to address your unique individual needs.

What Can Injectables Accomplish?

injectables 0 Injectables have become increasingly popular in recent years. They provide a minimally invasive, nonsurgical alternative to facial plastic surgery. Many patients find these options appealing due to the lack of downtime and the lower cost associated with a nonsurgical solution.

Injectables will temporarily reverse signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles and lost facial volume. These treatments achieve results much faster than a facelift and because there is no downtime, you can resume normal activities the same day.

There are two different types of injectables – wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers. The right option for you will depend on the specific signs of aging you are looking to address.

Wrinkle relaxers temporarily prevent your facial muscles from contracting when you form facial expressions. This will cause the fine lines and wrinkles caused by these muscle contractions to relax, providing a more youthful complexion in the treatment region.

Dr. Jean offers two types of wrinkle relaxers: BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®. These injectables are an effective way to treat:

  • Crow’s feet (fine lines in the corners of your eyes)
  • Lines between the eyebrows
  • Frown lines
  • Smile lines
  • Forehead creases

Dermal fillers restore volume to your facial region, helping you reduce the appearance of wrinkles for a more youthful complexion. Dr. Jean can use dermal fillers to treat:

  • Marionette lines (vertical lines that extend down from the corners of your mouth to your chin)
  • Nasolabial folds (lines that run from the nose to the corners of your mouth)
  • Thin lips
  • Vertical lip lines
  • Sunken cheeks
  • Small, poorly-defined chin or jawline
  • Under eye circles

At Main Line Plastic Surgery, we offer a variety of dermal fillers, including:

  • Juvéderm®
  • Restylane®
  • Radiesse®
  • Belotero®

Each of these fillers targets slightly different signs of aging, and the right filler for you will depend on your unique needs and goals.

What Can a Facelift Accomplish?

facial procedures 0 While injectables provide effective facial rejuvenation results, a facelift remains unparalleled in its ability to deliver a customized, long-lasting outcome. In many instances, you can achieve dramatic results that will help you look as much as ten years younger after your facelift.

Dr. Jean can address just about any signs of aging, including:

  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Sagging in the mid-face region
  • Sagging facial muscles and skin
  • Jowls
  • Banding in the neck region
  • Hollows under the eyes
  • Deep creases across the face
  • Fallen fat and tissue

While injectables are an effective way to address lost facial volume and relax wrinkles caused by facial contractions, they are limited in the scope of what they can achieve. Only a facelift will target sagging tissue in order to address many of the other signs of aging listed above.

Keep in mind that a facelift focuses on the middle to lower portion of your face. If your primary goal is to address signs of aging in the eyes and forehead region, Dr. Jean may recommend:

Which of these Solutions is Right for Me?

The right solution for you depends on a variety of factors, including:

  • The location and severity of your signs of aging
  • Whether you desire a longer lasting solution
  • Whether you are willing to commit to the longer recovery process associated with a surgical procedure
  • Your budget

A facelift provides you with much more customized and extensive facial rejuvenation. Therefore, it is a more effective solution if you are experiencing more extensive signs of facial aging. Your results will also last significantly longer – you can enjoy your facelift results for as long as ten years, while most injectable treatments last anywhere from three months to two years depending on the treatment.

However, you will also experience a much longer recovery process with a facelift and your final outcome may not be visible until you are fully healed, which may take several months. Injectables provide results much more quickly and eliminate the downtime associated with a surgical procedure. This option is ideal for men and women who are only experiencing mild to moderate signs of facial aging and prefer a minimally invasive solution. While the results don’t last as long, Dr. Jean can perform follow-up treatments periodically to help you maintain your youthful appearance.
