Do I Need Surgery for Drooping Brows?

The appearance of the face is influenced by the eyes. Due to the delicate nature of the eyelid tissue and the skin around the eyes, this part of the face can show the signs of aging long before we expect them. One of the primary signs of aging that we see is a descending brow line. This may occur on one eyebrow or both. Often, one side drops lower than the other, creating some degree of facial asymmetry and, let’s be honest, a whole lot of frustration.

At Main Line Plastic Surgery, we help patients look and feel their best by providing proven options for facial and body enhancement. To have a brow lift today doesn’t mean what it used to. Here, we discuss the surgical and nonsurgical methods considered when the brows are aging the face.

Brow Lift Surgery

Historically, drooping brows have been corrected using a surgical approach. Brow lift surgery once required a long incision that ran across the top of the head. Though positioned behind the hairline, a long incision may have been unappealing to many potential patients. Today, brow lift surgery usually involves a few short incisions behind the hair line. The doctor gently lifts tissue to reposition the brows to a more youthful height and curvature, trims excess skin, and closes the incisions in a way that promotes minimal scarring. The brow lift is performed in one to two hours using a local anesthetic and sedation.

Injectable Brow Lift Treatment

Some patients prefer a non-surgical approach to facial rejuvenation. Some are interested in observing the effects of a non-surgical brow lift to discern whether they may want to move forward with brow lift surgery. Both situations are common, and both offer significant benefit. To lift the brow non-surgically, an experienced provider selects either Botox and Dysport. This is based on the client’s preferences and unique facial anatomy. They inject the appropriate amount of product into the muscles that operate the brows, generating a lift of a few millimeters.

The effects of a non-surgical brow lift do not occur immediately. They take five to seven days to develop. After that time, the results of treatment typically last from three to six months. Patients appreciate that there is no downtime associated with injectables and that they can simply touch-up the area as needed to maintain a more youthful appearance.
